Falcons Black started the game well by breaking Romans’ first centre pass and taking the ball to goal. The home team’s play looked structured, simple but highly effective and Fran Desmond (C) and Katie Flaherty (WA) in particular controlled the early play. However, it wasn’t long before the quarter saw both sides going goal for goal, although both teams were also applying heavy defence throughout the court, which made life difficult for each team’s attacking players. By the end of the first quarter, Falcons Black had edged it 12 goals to 10.

Falcons Black made one change: Helen Hancock replaced Olivia Mason at GA.
Entering the second quarter, Falcons upped the intensity with lots of turnovers from Nicola Caunt (GD), Iman Thomas (GK) and Dominque McKee (WD) in defence. Meanwhile Tyler Bexton (GS) looked confident in attack and linked well with Helen Hancock (GA). There were some promising patches of play from Falcons but in the last two minutes of the quarter, they were forced to panic by their opponents, who got the turnover and took the ball to goal. It meant that Falcons Black lost the quarter by 2 goals, resulting in the overall score being finely poised at half time with 19 goals each.
Falcons made one change: Olivia Mason was back on at GA.
The home team continued to create lots of turnovers and especially so in the defence area. Unfortunately the chances were not capitalised on though. The team’s shooting percentage was still high, with only one shot missed all quarter, but the team were simply not able to take enough shots. Then potential disaster struck. With five minutes to go in the quarter, Iman Thomas (GK) went for a ball outside of the circle and landed on her wrist. Falcons needed a reshuffle. Nicola Caunt moved to GK, Dom McKee to GD and Emily Watson was brought on at WD. The third quarter saw Falcons fall behind by 5, losing this period of play 6 goals 11 (with an overall score of Falcons 25-30 Romans).
Falcons Black brought on Hannah Joseph to (WA) and moved Katie Flaherty to bench. The replacement started well, dictating the attacking third, but Roman kept the heavy pressure on and seemed to have renewed energy, pulling away with three consecutive goals. To add to Falcons Black’s woes, Francesca (C) went for a ball and landed funnily, injuring her right ankle and needing to be replaced by Katie Flaherty. Even still, Falcons Black pushed on to try and close the gap but it was just too much. Falcons lost the quarter 10 goals to Romans’ 13.
Final Score: Falcons Black 35-43 Romans.
