Lincoln Beat Grasshoppers to make it 4 out of 4

27/10/2013

Lincoln made it four wins out of four games on Sunday with a win over Leicestershire’s Grasshoppers.

With Lucy Heathershaw, Angie White and Laura Forsey absent and injured, Lincoln welcomed back Becky Baker and Amy Womersley into the team.

After last week’s reshuffle, Jade Houlton retuned to defence to work alongside Lizzie Saywell, which allowed Amy Wormersley to join Anna Gilbert further up the court.

It was a tight first quarter as Lincoln struggled to feed the ball into their attack. However they edged ahead to take a two goal lead: 11-9.
Vic Adams moved to GK in the second quarter as her ‘man marking’ was required to defend Lincoln’s goal circle. Meanwhile Jade Houlton (WD) and Beth Richardson (C) applied pressure on every pass which allowed Lizzie Saywell and Vic Adams to consistently turn over ball. At the other end of the court Becky Baker replaced Anna Gilbert at GS to provide a different option. This quarter turned out to be Lincoln’s best as they scored fifteen goals and only let in five, meaning a twelve-goal lead had opened up at half time.

In the third quarter Grasshoppers’ defence excelled in turning over possession but Lincoln still managed to win the quarter, albeit by just a single goal. The score at the end of the third period was 40-27.

Abby was a solid Centre option for the final quarter, producing some excellent feeds into the shooting circle, whilst Sophie Reed made an appearance as WA. Her fresh legs helped to create options on the court and her movement onto the ball prevented many more Grasshopper turnovers. Vic Adams also excelled as GK in this quarter making rebounds, tips and interceptions.

The final score was: Lincoln 51-34 Grasshopper NC.

Becky Baker was awarded the ‘best player’ by the opposition. Her shooting was excellent, she was a strong and confident player on court and had an excellent ability to hold space.
