Lincoln City were hoping to continue their winning ways as they prepared to face Derbyshire, Iceni on Sunday 6th August. Iceni have been tough opponents in the past and with three Lincoln players unavailable, it could have gone either way.
There were two changes to the side that thrashed TFC Too last week, with Anna Gilbert and Becky Baker making up the GS and GA partnership and Jade Houlton starting alongside Lucy Heathershaw in defence. Although Iceni started well, Lincoln were able to capitalise on the away team’s errors. This, coupled with a strong shooting combination and excellent support from Beth Richardson, allowed Lincoln to end the first quarter with an eight goal lead (17-9).
Lincoln’s defence maintained the pressure during the second quarter but an injury to Becky meant that Laura Forsey was thrust into GA and Megan Samways on at WA. Laura sank her first shot but it was a close quarter with Lincoln scoring just one more goal than Iceni, making it 28-19 at half time.
Lincoln made a lot of interceptions throughout the court during the third quarter with Anna setting an example. The home team’s versatile defence of a fresh-legged Lizzie Saywell (who came on at WD) and Lucy and Jade, proved too strong for Iceni. Laura also showed great intensity and Lucy had an outstanding quarter at GD, which Lincoln took to lead 38-26.
A number of changes were made in the final quarter. Sophie Reed made an appearance at GA, Lizzie moved to GD and Vic Adams regained the WD bib. Megan had an excellent quarter as C, but Iceni dominated and Lincoln were unsteady at times. Iceni won the final quarter by six goals, however Lincoln’s initial lead kept them safe and they won the game overall 47-41.
Becky was once again rewarded best player by the opposition, making it two out of two, as she and Lincoln look ahead to their next game.
