Leicestershire’s Grasshoppers took on Lincolnshire’s Brigg in this weekend’s East Midlands Netball Regional League Division 2 game.
Brigg had the first centre pass and through some strong play, turned over a couple of Grasshoppers' centre passes early on. The Leicestershire team were struggling to find any rhythm and they missed several important goal attempts. At the end of the first quarter, Brigg led 12-9.
Stand-in-coach, Andy Scigliano made no changes at quarter time, preferring to allow her players the time to find their rhythm. The decision paid dividends. Grasshoppers came out in a very determined mood and began with a successful conversion of their own centre pass, followed by several key conversions off Brigg's centre passes. Clearly Grasshopper's early jitters had disappeared and the netball flowed much better with Grasshoppers eventually storming to a 17-5 win of that quarter, putting the overall score at 17-26 to Grasshoppers.
Brigg came back at Grasshoppers in the third quarter making the score 27-33 going into the final fifteen minutes. This made the fourth quarter rather tense. Grasshoppers worked really hard to protect the lead and with some good defending all over the court they held on, even though Brigg won the final quarter 10-9.
Final score: Brigg 37-42 Grasshoppers
Player of the Match was Sophie Mills for her excellent feeds into the circle and her excellent defence in the attacking end.
