Turnford vs Falcons Black – 15th December 2013 Starting 7 GK – Kaylea McQuade GD – Kathryn Binks WD – C – Katie Flaherty (Captain) WA – Emily Watson GA – Christie Simpson GS – Rochelle Powell Coaches Head Coach Kaylea McQuade Assistant Coach/Team Manager – Donna Swann | Quarter 1 Despite a player short, Falcons Black started the quicker of the two teams, settling into a good pace and applying pressure on Turnford. It allowed the away team to race into a 1-4 lead. However Turnford then started utilising their spare player and quickly made the score 6-apiece. The rest of the quarter was then rather even but Falcons made some unforced errors in the last few minutes, which Turnford took advantage of. The first quarter ended Turnford 14-11 Falcons Black. |
Quarter 2
Both teams held their first respective centre passes but the next few centre passes were turned over by each opposition as both sides started to feel the pressure. Falcons’ attack found some success through feeding Rochelle (GS) in the goal circle who duly obliged, scoring with ease. However, in the final 2 minutes before half time, Turnford broke Falcons’ centre pass and took the ball to goal, leaving the quarter score Turnford 16-14 Falcons Black (overall score: Turnford 30-25 Falcons Black).
Quarter 3
After a positive team talk from coach and captain, Falcons Black started strongly in the third quarter. Unfortunately though, they didn’t always capitalise on their chances despite winning the ball just as many times as the opposition did. As the quarter wore on, Turnford began exploiting their extra player advantage and eventually won the quarter 15-9 (overall score: Turnford 45-34 Falcons Black).
Quarter 4
Turnford broke Falcons’ centre pass at the beginning of the fourth quarter by forcing the away team out wide and limiting the options for the ball carrier. Turnford’s tactics meant that Falcons held onto the ball for longer than the allowable three seconds, which ultimately handed the ball over to the home side who took it to goal. Falcons broke straight back though, turning over Turnford’s centre pass. Both teams then held onto their own passes for the next few minutes but unforced errors by the away side crept in once more, allowing Turnford to extend their lead. Falcons showed great courage and determination but with just six players, it was not surprising the game ended Turnford 59-42 Falcons Black.
Congratulations to Katie Flaherty who once again was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’. Special thanks must also go to Paula and Christie for scoring and timekeeping for Falcons Black!
