Quarter 1
With an early arrival to the venue, Falcons Black started with a strong warm up, led by Olivia Mason.
Falcons got off to a strong first quarter making every centre pass and turnover. Good feeds into the shooting the circle and some incredible turnovers from Issy Beighton in defence meant Falcons were looking stronger than in previous weeks. The Loughborough-based team-play looked structured – simple but very effective – and at the end of the first quarter there was only two goals in it: Telstars 11-9 Falcons Black.
Quarter 2
Falcons made no changes going into quarter two. The opposition’s defence turned over lots of balls that were fed into the opposition circle, meaning Falcons struggled to convert. There were some promising patches of play and Falcons Black adjusted well to Telstars’ substitutions. However lacking in consistency Falcons were unable to take the lead and in fact fell behind slightly. The half-time score: Telstars 25-21 Falcons Black.
Quarter 3
Falcons made two changes going into the third quarter with Helen on at GS and Emily on at C. The away team continued to create lots of turnovers and especially so in the defence area. However they couldn’t always take advantage of such opportunities. There was a small drop in Falcons’ play and the team struggled to be clinical with the ball. These mistakes allowed Telstars to push ahead and make the score 37-27.
Quarter 4
Falcons brought on Fran in the fourth quarter at WD and with a motivational speech from captain Olivia Mason, the team were ready to fight for a win. There were patches of clean sharp netball during the final fifteen minutes and Falcons looked strong. However due to falling behind by 10 goals in the third quarter they were unable to pull back the game. Falcons really tried hard to close the gap but despite their efforts, Telstars continued to build on their lead, winning overall by 49 goals to 36.
‘Player of the Match’ went to Issy Beighton for making some fantastic turnovers and dominating the defence.
