Falcons Yellow came out of the blocks ready to played hard and earn themselves another win but Hinckley Hurricanes stood in their way and were determined to make them work for it.
The squad for today’s match – Alex Wood-Davis (GS), Keri Moorhouse (GA) Melanie Brennan (WA), Emma Davis (C), Tamsin Mason (WD) , Samantha Brown (GD) and Jo Holt (WA). Weller Howard and Connie Xavier were on the bench.
Hinckley Hurricanes stepped up the pressure in the second quarter but Falcons Yellow’s defence of Brown, Holt and Mason work hard and forced the opposition into making errors and missing shots. At the other end of the court Hurricanes’ defence also applied pressure by closing down space and making it very difficult for Falcons to find room to manoeuvre and feed balls into the circle. This allowed Hurricanes to take a six-goal lead going into the half-time break, with the score poised at 30-24.
Falcons made some changes during the half time break with Brennan moving to Centre and Weller Howard coming in to replace Emma. Holt and Brown switched positions with Holt coming out to GD and Brown dropping back to GK. Howard in her first game back for some time settled in well and fed the shooters and in particular Wood-Davis very well, who was backed up admirably by Brennan. It took a couple of minutes for Hurricanes to adjust to the changes but they worked hard and took their shooting opportunities well despite the continued pressure from the Falcons defence.
Falcons’ task of closing the gap was made harder after an injury to Holt who unfortunately had to be replaced in the circle defence. Mason moved to GK and Emma came on at WD. Unfortunately for the Derbyshire team, Hurricanes increased their lead by twelve goals with the three-quarter time score now 49-37.
Falcons Yellow decided to make a final change for the last quarter by bringing on Xavier at GA to replace Moorhouse.
Falcons did have chances to close the gap and thanks to some superb defending by Brown and Mason, the team managed to score three goals without a Hurricanes reply. But once again Hurricanes stepped up a gear and increased their lead further.
The final score: Hinckley Hurricanes 70-52 Falcons Yellow.
Falcons’ defence played superbly well but the player of the match went to Jo Holt, who, despite having to leave the court through injury, was outstanding for Falcons.
